MODALS OF ADVICE-SHOULD, OUGHT TO, HAD BETTER

English speakers use the modal verbs “should” “ought to” and “had better” to express that they think something is a good (or a bad) idea. “Should” is the most common way to give advice or recommendations.

Here are some examples:

-You should eat salad.

-You shouldn´t go to bed so late. It´s bad for you.

-Should I go to the doctor?

"Ought to" is usually used in affirmative sentences, and "Ought to" is not ussually used for negatives and questions.

-You ought to tell him the truth.

-You ought not to have said that.

-Ought we to build a better future?

-You'd better consult the doctor.

-You'd better not tell Nancy about the broken glass, she will go crazy.

These examples have the same basic advice message, but “had better” is a bit stronger. It includes the idea of a warning: something bad will happen if you do not follow the advice.
